Flathead Coalition Meeting Gathers Concerned Residents Legal Expert Says Montana Should Have Input on Canadian Mining, Drilling

Speaking to the Flathead Coalition Monday night about mining projects in British Columbia north of Glacier National Park, an expert in international water and energy law told concerned valley residents that legal precedent is on the side of Montanans.

"On this one, you're fighting on the side of the angels," Richard Paisley, professor of law at the University of British Columbia, said. ?You?ve got international law on your side.?

Summit's Corporate Sponsors Raise Eyebrows
Who?s Paying for PNWER?

BP Inc., which announced in May its intention to explore coalbed methane development in the headwaters of the Flathead River in southeastern B.C., is one of PNWER?s four ?Diamond? sponsors. Diamond sponsors pay $50,000 to have their logos displayed on the front page of the PNWER Web site and publications, along with a number of other privileges, including the opportunity for the CEO to address the summit, to help plan a private event, prominently display banners and a booth. BP was listed as a ?Platinum? sponsor of the summit, which indicates a contribution of $35,000.

The impact of the potential mine on downstream could be devastating

"It's one more piece of evidence to support the position that so many people have. You can go all along the Canada-U.S. border and there is no other region that sustains such a diversity of wildlife."

Angelo added: "The public response to the proposed mine has been overwhelmingly negative.

We don't need to industrialize another landscape."
